Bridge to a Brighter Tomorrow: The Patani Malay-Thai Multilingual Education Programme
The Patani Malay-Thai Multilingual Education Programme (PMT-MLE) document in this publication an action research initiative begun in 2007 which, over the past decade, has demonstrated the effectiveness of multilingual education on learning outcomes for children.
Pilot schools were paired with comparison schools; the pilot schools followed an adapted curriculum which uses Patani Malay as the main language of instruction in the early years, while using a new "Thai for Ethnic Children" curriculum to bridge to the national language. As the children grow older, the amount of time in which Thai is used as the language of instruction increases. The comparison schools followed the normal “Thai language only” curriculum. Annual evaluations tracked student performance and community attitudes.
